Falling Iguanas?

ree

You read that right. South Florida is on the lookout for falling iguanas this weekend. The cold air moving through Minnesota Thursday into Friday (Jan. 27-28) will be making its way all the way to the southeast creating widespread frost for interior & northern Florida and pushing temps to or below 40° even in southern Florida.

Below: Potential lows early Sunday morning.

That's significant because at that temperature, most cold blooded creatures (like iguanas) become immobile.

Green iguanas are not native to southern Florida, but obviously when imported took off in the ideal climate, much like their native climates.

They will be falling from trees (or wherever they're resting) onto hopefully soft ground, rather than pavement when temps get to or below 40°. Usually they are uninjured, and as temperatures warm back up they will become active again. Think of a heated rock for your chameleons (I had many growing up). Cold blooded reptiles need heat to regulate digestion and everything else.
